Today most shops carry products and services from a number of mobile operators, MVNOs and terminal producers, who are competing amongst each other for the attention of the customer. Furthermore, sales assistants' own preferences significantly influence what products are recommended and the choices customers make.

Mobile operators, MVNOs and terminal producers need to differentiate themselves from their competitors. In relations to distribution channels, this means focusing on issues like:

- single vs. multiple operator shops
